Kinomoto Sakura est une petite fille de 10 ans vivant seule avec son père et son frère ainé Toya (ou Thomas). Sa mère étant morte quand elle était petite, chacun doit aider aux tâches ménagères à tour de rôle dans la famille. Un jour qu’elle est seule à la maison, Sakura s’y attelle, mais est dérangé par un étrange bruit venant du sous-sol, où son père entrepose des livres. Elle y découvre un étrange grimoire scellé et, sans vraiment s’en rendre compte, Sakura en provoque l’ouverture et un vent violent s’en dégage avant qu’apparaisse une étrange créature. Ce lionceau ailé miniature est Keroberos, le gardien des Clow Card. Cependant, à cause de Sakura, toutes les cartes se sont échappées laissant le duo dans l’embarras. Ces cartes sont dangereuses et il faudra toutes les capturer afin qu’elles ne blessent personne. Sakura devient alors Card Captor (chasseuse de carte) et est chargé de toutes les retrouver. Peu à peu, de nombreux obstacles se dresseront devant elle et un rival apparaîtra : Li Shaolan, un descendant de Clow Reed, le créateur des Clow Card, qui se désigne comme leur propriétaire légitime.
