Ginta Toramizu, en deuxième année de collège, passe son temps à rêver à de magnifiques mondes sortis tout droit de contes de fées.
Sa mère est justement romancière d’histoire de ce genre et son père a mystérieusement disparu six ans plus tôt. Ginta prétend rêver toutes les nuits d’un pays magique, s’attirant les moqueries de ses camarades de classe. Mais une fille le prend au sérieux : son amie Koyuki.
Un jour, une sorte de fantôme (nommée Pierrot) fait son apparition durant un cours, et propose à Ginta de l’emmener dans un autre monde correspondant au monde de ses rêves, il accepte donc sans hésiter un seul instant.
Il atterrit dans le pays de Mär, tout à fait semblable à celui auquel il rêve chaque nuit et dans lequel il est doté de compétences physiques hors normes, car il vient d’un autre monde, le nôtre.
Dans ce pays existent des artefacts, de petits objets nommés ÄRM, possédant des pouvoirs spéciaux, comme invoquer des esprits, se transformer en arme ou en gardien. Aidé par une mystérieuse sorcière nommée Dorothy, Ginta s’approprie un ÄRM parlant, appelé Babbo, extrêmement rare, vu que les ÄRM parlants sont pratiquement introuvables. Babbo est une sorte de boule très lourde accroché par une chaîne à un marteau, mais selon Ginta, le marteau est un bilboquet. Babbo est assez prétentieux et fait tout ce qu’il peut pour paraître gentilhomme.
Mais le pays est sous la menace de l’armée de l’Echiquier. Menée par Le Fantôme, elle a tenté six ans plus tôt d’anéantir le pays mais ont été repoussées par Danna, homme mystérieux venu du même monde que Ginta. Ginta a donc été « invoqué » par un habitant de Mär pour repousser l’Echiquier, comme le fit Danna, 6 ans auparavant, mort peu après cette guerre. Libérant la princesse Snow, poursuivie par les pièces de L’Echiquier et qui ressemble comme deux gouttes d’eau à Koyuki, Ginta commence un long combat contre Fantôme et son armée.
