Au cours de l’une de ses missions, il manque de se faire écraser par un bus qu’il évite grâce à une lycéenne, Hiyori Iki. N’ayant pu éviter le véhicule, la jeune fille verra alors son âme se séparer de son corps lorsqu’elle s’endort. Refusant de rester dans cet état, Hiyori demandera à Yato de l’aider à retrouver son état originel. En attendant de trouver une solution, sa condition va lui permettre de découvrir un autre univers collé au sien, qui est aussi fascinant que dangereux : le monde des esprits.
