Le héros de cette série, le journaliste Brian Thompson, nous fait revivre les grandes rencontres de la coupe du monde de football.
L’histoire commence de la première coupe de 1930 en Uruguay jusqu’à celle de 1994 qui a eu lieu aux États-Unis dans laquelle on nous dépeint également la vie de Thompson de sa jeunesse jusqu’à nos jours. On voit renaître brillamment le jeu spectaculaire de joueurs tels que Franz Beckenbauer, Gard Müller, Eusebio et le plus grand d’entre tous, le roi Pelé.
